The summer holidays are over. The people starting school are getting themselves ready, friends are moving out and away. And here I am, still in the same room, starting my gap year. This is probably the first time in my life everyone is going in a different direction, and it shows more than I’d expected.
As I’m taking a gap year and that comes with its own changes and adjustments, and as there will be loads of people who will have to choose between uni, a gap year or no uni altogether, I figured I would document my experience taking a gap year, so others can gain some insight into what it’s like going the route that I’m taking.
So what are the advantages I’ve found so far?
First of all, by taking a year out, I’ve given myself time. Depending on your personal situation, you might use this time for deciding what (and/or if) you want to study, to amp up your knowledge on some topic you didn’t get the chance to learn before, or just for travel and new experiences. For me, it will mostly be the latter. Another time-related advantage is (to some extend) making my own hours. Staying up late and sleeping in? Yes please! This goes without saying though: all in moderation.
And, in all honesty – the downsides?
One disadvantage has definitely sunk in over the past week in particular, and it’s the split. Like I said, people are moving out and starting such a new life. Of course, a gap year is an adventure too, but my routine, my room and everything in it are mostly the same. I do get to see bits and pieces of student life by hanging out with friends, but other than that, it’s a different world.
Overall, I don’t regret my decision to take a year out. I’ve got time and now is when I want to make use of that. Let’s see where it leads me!
What are you doing this year?
Love, Ruby
