Why I love the Internet

Yesterday marked the 1 year anniversary of my current youtube channel (you can find it here) and for the occasion I thought I’d write a bit about the Internet and its wonders. Also just because I like it.

#1 it teaches

When in doubt, Google. But not just that: if there is a cheap way to do X 101 course, it’s watching a web-series. There’s science, sociology, marketing… I can’t say I’ve tried everything, but I’m pretty sure there’s something out there for everyone. If you’re at a point in your life where you don’t know what you want to do: see what kind of things you do online and it’ll probably give you a good framework to base your path on.

#2 it inspires

I don’t know about you, but inspiration hits me in the weirdest, most inexplicable ways. I can be going through my “watch later” playlist on Youtube, be too lazy to skip a video that I don’t want to watch at that time and strike gold. I can also go for a walk and experience an equally inspiring sensation, but that’s not the point right now.

#3 it’s everything

There are very few things that can not be found online, if any. Even if you can’t find exactly what you were looking for, you can find something similar enough to work with, or find something very different from your original subject, that turns out to come together with your starting topic perfectly. You never know what you’re going to get, but there is bound to be something good in there.

#4 it empowers

I realize not everyone has the privilege of internet access, but for those who do, like you and me, it opens a lot of doors. People that are underprivileged get a platform they can reach millions of people on and make their voice heard, without depending as much on barriers of for example transport. You write or film something, hit send, and anyone with an internet connection will (technically) be able to find it.

Of course there are a lot of caveats to this, with old and new hierarchies still putting limits on our freedom, but there’s definitely improvement and I can only hope there will be more.

What do you like about life online?

Love, Ruby
