We’re all a little bit basic inside. In case this term hasn’t reached you yet; it means something similar to being mainstream. You’re basic if you queue up for the first PSL, proceed to instagram your drink and then go queue for the next one, for example. Being basic or mainstream always gets a slight negative connotation, probably for not being creative or individual. This on the one hand is understandable, but it’s also hypocritical: there are very few people in todays world who do things no one else does. We’re all different combinations of traits and likes and styles, but in the end, we all do similar things.
I own an army-green parka; I go to Starbucks every now and again; I take selfies and I own a polaroid camera. Does that mean I’m not creative or generally not good? No. If I take a test and give the same answers as someone else, does that mean I can’t think for myself? No. Just because I do some things the same way others do, doesn’t mean I don’t have a mind of my own. I choose to follow the lead of others because I like what they’re doing; I choose to do something different because that’s what feels right. The way I see it, we’re all collages of different magazine pages. No two people will be exactly the same at every point, if only because they don’t know the same things.
Wear your basic with pride; it’s part of your individuality. There’s a reason clichés become clichés: it’s because they’re true, or what everyone likes to hear. There’s nothing wrong with that. Now go drink that PSL and instagram the hell out of it.
