Speak Up

We’re told to speak up about so many issues. We should speak up about sexism, racism, homophobia, and whatmore. These are issues, and they are definitely worthy of our attention, but there is one thing that tends to get swallowed by this giant ocean: you.

I personally consider myself a listener. I don’t know if I’m a listener by choice or by what people made me think I should be, but I know I carry the weight on my shoulders not only of myself, but the others that tell me their stories as well. Their problems might not be constantly on my mind, but they do keep me occupied, and often make me feel like my own problems are really silly compared to theirs. Which is, in fact, not true.

Sure, my problems may fall lower on the general scale of “seriousness of problems”, but that doesn’t mean it can’t bother me or influence who I am. Just because one person has more teddy-bears than the other, doesn’t mean they don’t have any teddy-bears. The world is not black and white, it’s grey.

Basically, what I wanted to let you know, is that you deserve someone to listen to you for a change, no matter how unnatural it may feel or how unimportant your problems might seam in the grand spectrum. You deserve to be comforted, it’s okay to cry and you are wonderful. Please, try to remember that.

Love, Ruby
