Is it food?

As of late, I have been obsessed with… Food documentaries. I know, that might sound lame, but really, it’s not. I have been thinking about my health for a good few years now, and it has only been recently that I felt that push to really go and practice what I preach. Not saying I’m the world’s healthiest person all of a sudden, but I am most certainly trying harder.

I started actively reading about health, I think, in 2013. There was an article in the dutch Vogue all about our addiction to sugar, and after that I immediately went on to read Food Rules by Michael Pollan, a book about real foods and what you should eat. A little later, I started watching Annie Jaffrey‘s channel on Youtube, a very health-conscious woman. I had been watching a lot of her videos on health with interest (although sometimes thinking it a bit extreme), when she made a – from my perspective – dramatic change in her diet: she went raw vegan. Dramatic and extreme are key words here, as my views have changed quite a lot since then.

Up until recently, I thought the only really bad things out there, were fast food and overeating. Of course, we shouldn’t have huge burgers and steak every night, but surely eating eggs is fine? Then came the food documentaries, and the world shifted. Have you ever thought about what an egg is? It’s a hen’s period. Have you ever thought about what a cow’s milk is meant for? It’s meant to make a calf grow. A lot. Fast. Have you ever thought about what monkeys, the species we are most closely related to, eat? Plants. Oh, and some termites and lice, but that’s kind of besides the point. I know none of these things had ever occurred to me before.

I am still educating myself further on the subject and trying to find out what’s true and what’s personal perception, but I have found that just eating more fruits has made me feel better already, and I am very much determined on getting myself on a diet that is as close to what nature has meant for it to be all along as possible. As if yet I have officially and completely cut out meat, and I am planning to expand this to other animal products in the future. This subject really interests me, so there will be more on the topic around here, in a possibly very near future.

Are you actively working on your health?

Love, Ruby
