The road to Rome

The road to Rome

The promise of a grammar school education in the Netherlands is thus: in your fifth and forelast year, you shall go to Rome. Now, this obviously wasn’t my reason to choose a “classic education”, in fact I didn’t really buy the fairytale, BUT recently it was my time to go on this fabulous trip at last. And boy, was it awesome.

First of all, Rome is beautiful as, well, fuck. Especially with the ever-abundant rays of sunshine (can you feel me getting poetic about this?), the city always looks it’s best. It’s pretty at dawn, midday, sunset, and nighttime. There’s something ancient (or at least very old)(or great cheap coffee!) at pretty much every corner and you can almost feel that there’s a story behind just about anything.

If all of this isn’t beautiful enough by itself, our four years of slavery and sleep-deprivation did turn out to be worth it, and we got to see so much stuff we’d been reading about come to life. It’s amazing when you have been studying pictures of statues and fora for years and then one day, you see the real thing and it’s greater than you could have ever imagined. For me, this feeling of being able to recognize and understand these things was one of the best ever, and I’m pretty sure I wasn’t the only one.

These two facts made a solid base for an amazing nine days, and combined with being amongst amazing people and being away from my usual surroundings, it’s safe to say the trip was totally worth the wait.
Question is: what’s going to get me through the last two years?!

Did you ever have a trip you’d been looking forward to for a very long time, and was it what you hoped?

Love,

Ruby
